Nature Adventures

Adult:£37.50Child:£37.50
Suitable for:Adults, Teens keen on nature

Explore nature in recovery!   The River Dart area is establishing a national reputation of nature recovery and rewilding.   The Dart estuary ebbs and flows within a stunning landscape of rewildling, reforestation, traditional farming and saltmarsh restoration, including the famous Sharpham Estate.

From our canoes you have the best view with local guides who know the river better than anyone and can point out the positive changes underway.

We have scheduled these adventures to coincide with some of the seasonal highlights, so you can experience the changing character and wildlife of the estuary throughout the seasons. NB There are no guarantees when looking for wildlife, but we hope for these to include migratory shellducks in full feather, egret mating rituals, seals bottling in the summer high tide, ospreys on their stop over on their way south, starling murmurations and maybe kingfishers under the boughs of the oaks trees in their autumn colour.

For dates coming up please see below.

As with all our adventures, we will have time to stop on the shore to chill and enjoy a brew around a fire.  Bringing a picnic for this is highy recommended.

  • Wildlife watching
  • Scheduled for seasonal wildlife highlights
  • Fire, brew and picnic stop
There are currently no scheduled trips, check back again soon.

Dates for 2026:

18/05 1800-2130  Shellducks in full colour.  Egrets mating calls.

16/06 1800-2200  Midsummer evening birdsong

30/08 1700-2100 Ospreys?!?

27/09 1700-2030  Starling murmurations & autumn colours

25/10 1615-2000   Starling murmurations & autumn colours

The above all begin at Stoke Gabriel, going out over high tide, past Sharpham Great Woods and up to their rewilding landscape and where saltmarsh restoration is underway.

Private boat trips based on the above are possible, with option to start at the Maltsters Arms, Tuckenhay, although we might not get so far up river as it is further from there.

To explore down river on a low tide, please consider our 'Paddle to the Pub and Home by Moonlight' Adventures. These go from Stoke Gabriel to Dittisham, stopping on the shore on the way back as it gets dark around us.  We don't advertise these specifically as wildlife watching nature adventures, but we normally take in the mud flats preferred by Curlews and one of the seals' favourite spots.

Children.  Please note our Nature Adventures involves longer stretches sitting in the canoes, compared to our other trips, and they require the ability to sit still and quiet.  Our agenda is more driven by the wildlife rather than crew members.  For this reason these adventures are less suited to children.  We don't like to impose a minimum age but please consider this if booking your child.  We are family people and it is our mission to make these opportunities available to everyone, so please note all our other trips are very well suited for children!
