Meet The Team

Our Skippers are a mixed bag of strange and interesting folk.  They come from a wide range of professional backrounds and interests, and all share our adventurous spirit and love of taking other people out on our magnificent estuary. When recruiting staff we look for local knowledge, water experience, an excellent approach to working with different groups of people, and a passion for being out on the river.  What this means is that you get to spend the day with some interesting people who have life experience and things to talk about, and who are excited by giving you the best possible experience.   All our staff hold Boatman Licenses issued by the Dart Harbour Authority.

Hugh - skipper and guide for canoe adventures

Hugh

Skipper and Company Director

Never off the water, Hugh's our No.1 Skipper.  Spend some time with Hugh and you'll soon be winding down and settling in to the rhthym of life on the River Dart.  He'll tune you into the birdsong, the folklore and have you confidently lighting fire and enjoying a satisfying brew in even the most unlikely conditions.

Hal - skipper and guide for canoe adventures

Hal

Skipper and Company Director

Hal grew up falling in and out of boats of various shapes and sizes on the River Dart, mainly sailing, rowing and motoring.  He discovered the art and joy of sitting at the back of a boat with a paddle whilst drifting down the Rio Beni, a Bolivian branch of the mighty Amazon river, where he was once stranded and needed to acquire a 'dugout' from the locals to continue his journey.

Charlie

Skipper

Charlie Chambers is a very experienced and qualified outdoor professional on land, water and the rocky bits in between. She has a background in youth work and possibly the most cheerful and upbeat disposition you could wish for.  We're lucky to get her as she is often busy running her own business Adelong Outdoor Education, which takes her from one end of Britain to the other, running programmes in Devon and also the Orkney Isles.  The name 'Adelong' is inspired by her time adventuring in Australia.

Adrian

Skipper

Adrian is a man of both rivers and mountains.  He is a founder member of Moorland Guides  and has more than 30 years experience in Mountain Rescue and over 40 years in scouting.  As 'Hillwise' he leads guided walks and navigation workshops on Dartmoor. He also leads overseas expeditions for World Challenge.  You may well also meet one of his six children on your Canoe Adventure as they are often lending a helping hand at the paddles.

Dan

Skipper

If you want lessons in work-life-balance, you can do a lot worse than learn from 4-jobs Dan.  When not Skippering for us, he's either framing pictures in his workshop at home, wielding his chainsaw somewhere, or being rodie for his wife, Miranda, a popular name on the national folk circuit.  Dan and Miranda even got married by canoe.  Dan is also a qualified and experienced teacher and you'll be hard pressed to find a group that could rock his cool.

Eve

Assistant Skipper

Growing up in Stoke Gabriel, Eve has pretty much lived sailing on the River Dart since Day 1.  From racing in Torbay and Dartmouth, she ended up competing in championships abroad.  We spotted her skills and potential when she was dinghy instructing at Stoke Gabriel.  She says she generally loves doing anything which involves being on the sea, and in 2017 she has been ably adapting her sailing helming skills to skippering our large canoes.

Lucy

Assistant Skipper

Total outdoors enthusiast Lucy, is also our resident vegan and purveyor of gelatine-free marshmallows for the campfire. Originally from London, Lucy now lives in Stoke Gabriel and enjoys living by and working on the river.  She also coaches with Totnes Canoe Club and, when not on the river, she can be found in the river, swimming about with her dog, Tilly; pedalling around on her bike; or dangling off a cliff somewhere nearby (climbing).

Dom

Assistant Skipper

Dom is currently studying a degree in Yacht Operations at Noss Marina on the Dart. He is rapidly developing a full packet of inshore and offshore boating qualifications, to which he is now adding the lesser recognised 'skippering of very large canoes'.  He is a Watch Leader within the Rona Sailing Project, leading groups of young and disadvantaged people aboard the boats, supporting them in their experience, enjoyment and safety upon the water, and he's a keen paddler too.

John

Assistant Skipper

Paul

Assistant Skipper

Paul recently passed on his GP Practice in Paignton to make space for taking life a little less seriously.  As you might expect from someone with a career on the front line of medical service under his belt, he brings an aura of calm, competence and 'like-nothing-in-life-is-going-to-phase-me-ever' to our operations, delivered with a quiet, wry humour.   When not out with us you'll likely find him canoeing somewhere else, or singing, or parked up in his campervan somewhere.

Angus Canoe Adventures Skipper

Angus

Assistant Skipper

Angus loves being out on the river, although he is best known locally as the 'Business Guru', 'Dad' or 'Harberton Cricket Club Legend', depending on who you are talking to. Indeed he has been offering his business mentoring services to Canoe Adventures in exchange for us training him up as an Assistant Skipper. We reckon we've got a very good deal.
