Meet The Team

Our Skippers are a mixed bag of strange and interesting folk.  They come from a wide range of professional backrounds and interests, and all share our adventurous spirit and love of taking other people out on our magnificent estuary. When recruiting staff we look for local knowledge, water experience, an excellent approach to working with different groups of people, and a passion for being out on the river.  What this means is that you get to spend the day with some interesting people who have life experience and things to talk about, and who are excited by giving you the best possible experience.   All our staff hold Boatman Licenses issued by the Dart Harbour Authority.

Hal - skipper and guide for canoe adventures

Hal

Skipper and Company Director

Hal is most likely to be the voice at the end of the phone when you're arranging your adventure.  He grew up falling in and out of boats on the River Dart and discovered the joy of sitting at the back of a boat with a paddle whilst drifting down the Rio Beni, a Bolivian branch of the Amazon, where he was stranded and acquired a 'dugout' from the locals to continue his journey.

Hal is from a farming family with land bordering the river and is currently working on diversification plans that include restoring nature as part of the River Dart Catchment. His other work includes organising and leading study programmes and events through his company, Futurebound

Hugh - skipper and guide for canoe adventures

Hugh

Skipper and Company Director

Spend some time with Hugh and you'll soon be winding down and settling in to the rhthym of life on the River Dart.  He'll tune you into the birdsong, the folklore and have you confidently lighting fire and enjoying a satisfying brew in even the most unlikely conditions.  Hugh is a qualified Forest School Leader and pretty much raised his children outdoors in their early years. Hugh started skippering for Canoe Adventures in 2009, he was a Company Director 2016-2024 and he is the creator of our Riverschool Holiday Club. In addition to his Canoe Adventures duties, Hugh also works as a coach, youth mentor and bushcraft instructor.

Eve

Skipper, Operations Manager

Eve has pretty much lived sailing on the River Dart since day one.  From racing in Torbay and Dartmouth, she has competed in championships abroad and made several channel crossings.  We spotted her skills and potential when she was dinghy instructing at Stoke Gabriel.  Since then she has worked in recycled plastics manufacture in Cornwall, cofounded the 'Leave it Better Community' and been on some amazing overseas adventures.   Whether its paddles, boats, cooking, comms or pretty much anything else, Eve is creatively and competently able to turn her hand.

John

Skipper

John is our wild man bushcraft master and leads most of our adult overnight adventures.  All he needs is a knife, a paddle and a group of people up for a wilderness adventure.  He'll have you skinning rabbits, hunting shellfish, lighting fire by fricition and building cozy shelters from the undergrowth.  John has all the practical skills of a natural group leader who has spent most of his life living off-grid. His unique set of faciltation skills and activities have been developed over more than 30 years of leading groups and running outdoor events.  He has been skippering for Canoe Adventures since 2016.   Outside of Canoe Adventures, Johns day job is site manager at Embercombe near Exeter.

Paul

Assistant Skipper

Paul recently passed on his GP Practice in Paignton to make space for taking life a little less seriously.  As you might expect from someone with a career on the front line of medical service under his belt, he brings an aura of calm, competence and 'like-nothing-in-life-is-going-to-phase-me-ever' to our operations, delivered with a quiet, wry humour.   When not out with us you'll likely find him canoeing somewhere else, or singing, or parked up in his campervan somewhere.

Mark

Company Director

Mark used to be a driving instructor.
